GigaByte GA-H81M-DS2 version 2.0
GigaByte GA-H81M-DS2 version 2.0
Hello, your PC is running on an older setup. Here are the details: Gigabyte GA-H81M-DS2 Sapphire RX460 with 2GB RAM and 16GB total, a Pentium G3220 at 3.0GHz, a 550w PSU, and a 1TB WD HDD. You're looking for upgrade suggestions that won’t cause bottlenecks and want to keep the motherboard if it's still working fine.
Searching for second-hand or brand-new components? It's worth noting that PC parts in Malaysia can be costly. With a budget, consider upgrading both the CPU and GPU—especially since the CPU is quite old and lacks the power needed for current gaming demands.
I’m open to both used and new parts, as long as everything functions well. The pricing seems a bit steep, though. I’m considering an i5 4460 processor and a fresh cooler.
The board lacks substantial VRM power. It’s unclear how much extra CPU it can handle. It’s an LGA1150 H81 chipset with a current CPU of 2/2 3.0GHz @52W. Some low-power Haswell i5s and i7s featuring 'S' in the last character run at around 65W. This would effectively double the number of cores. I have no idea what the motherboard can support beyond that minimal VRM presence, since it doesn’t appear to be designed for high voltage. The new cooler might work better if placed facing the board. These VRMs could overheat quickly.
If you're looking to save money and are okay with lower performance, the i5 4460 should work. For a better option, consider a 1060. On Shopee, the 4460 starts near RM300, while a used 1060 would cost around RM500 more. You might find better prices on Carousell or Mudah.my, which I usually choose. I bought my 750 Ti for RM150 on Carousell, compared to RM250 on Shopee.
You don’t have to install them together right away. Start with the CPU, and consider upgrading the GPU later—perhaps after a few months or more. The 4460 and RX460 remain a solid choice for casual gaming.
There are several solid 4th generation chips available. My setup includes an HTPC running an i5 4570 on an H81 ITX board, which performs well for most tasks and especially older titles. A mix of RX460 and 4460 should handle most games until recently. Haswell processors still work nicely, but keep in mind that a bare processor may need better cooling solutions.
Thanks for the guidance. I'll adjust after upgrading. Currently, I'm planning to use a 4460 CPU, but if I find a good deal, will the motherboard be compatible with 5th generation Intel chips?
The motherboard seems to work with CPUs from the fourth generation only.
