Checked the details on Reddit. The A520 and B550 models appear to be compatible with Zen+ APUs, even though they aren’t listed in the CPU compatibility section. It seems they do boot up and work with Windows as well.
Makers must earn revenue. They attempted to remove support for Zen 3 but AMD had to backtrack to back their earlier claims about the 400 series boards. They justified smaller BIOS sizes as a way to boost production. It's surprising how much alike the 300, 400, and 500 series chipsets are—similarities in VRMs, NIC cards, etc. Notably, PCIe bandwidth isn't a priority since our graphics cards still don't hit the 3.0 limit. That's just business as usual. Adjust this section, move that part, limit it here... and voilà, the lineup of motherboards is set.
Also noticed on Asus B550, but it only supports APUs and not CPUs. Probably an unofficial update so manufacturers can check factory displays (Zen 2 APUs are rare enough for mass production).
Gigabyte no longer offers dual BIOS updates. Your mention was about the Asus model you referenced.
I checked the B550 Aorus Elite and found it still had just one BIOS chip. For Asus, all models except the TUF (mayne ITX) come with BIOS flashback. I didn’t test the A520, but it seems Asus doesn’t usually offer competitive options in the budget segment.
