Hello my fellow PC Master race,
I've been experiencing really annoying stutter in games lately. I really dislike any kind of stutter, as it ruins my gaming experience. I'm using a 4K G-Sync monitor with a refresh rate between 30-60Hz, and my GPU is an RTX 2080 Ti. I've been trying to manage the frame rate by capping it at 57 with RTSS and enabling V-Sync, but my GPU keeps fluctuating between 58-59fps before dropping to 54, which causes the stutter. When I turn off V-Sync and RTSS and switch to Fast Sync, I'm getting over 60fps easily. It seems like capping the FPS is making my GPU and CPU stop responding to any further drops.
Anyone have suggestions? I've already cleaned all my drivers, and I'm considering a fresh Windows installation.
Why would you limit your FPS with a card like that?
Disable Vsync to avoid it, and steer clear of GSYNC or similar options since they introduce input lag that can make games feel terrible. If your FPS exceeds your monitor's refresh rate—like 60Hz—you shouldn't notice stuttering or tearing.
So the mouse doesn't get stuck, just a slight FPS drop that feels like a stutter. It seems to vary by game. In Resident Evil 2 I didn't have any problems—it ran smoothly. I've been replaying Metro 2033 redux and Metro Last Light Redux. When I switch off V-Sync and RTSS, my FPS jumps to about 80-100 frames per second. Only when I try to maintain it in the G-Sync range does it drop, which feels like stuttering. Maybe I should just enable fast sync and leave V-Sync and RTSS off? I own a 4K G-Sync monitor, and the G-Sync range is 30-60Hz. Blur Busters found that limiting FPS to 3 frames per second below the maximum of 60 helps. Then you can add V-Sync via the Nvidia control panel to avoid tearing.
I wasn't aware that there are g-sync monitors at 60hz. What's the benefit? Your frame rate shouldn't drop into double digits with your card. You should be achieving around 140fps on average, with all NV panel settings enabled and maximum high-quality AA settings. In games at 1440p, you shouldn't notice any frame drops. I don't understand why it falls to 57fps or 54fps—it doesn't seem correct for your graphics card. You should be reaching triple digits. Given your 60hz monitor, it's best to turn off VSync or use the Fast option. With Fast you won't get high fps, but turning off VSync will let you see all the frames your card can produce.
Your performance at 4k is understandable. You can achieve 60fps with minor frame drops. Try the FAST setting and you’ll see 120fps at 1440p, though 4k isn’t guaranteed. It should run smoothly like VSync at 60fps, even though it drops frames. If you can disable VSync, observe any tearing or other issues. With your graphics card, sticking at 60fps is a big mistake—180fps would be better. Probably you should have gone for an RTX 2060 instead. Don’t waste time chasing 60Hz at that speed.
I'm puzzled by your comments. A 4k at 120fps isn't realistic, which is why the aim is for 60fps 4k. I don't have a 1440p or 1080p display, so achieving 120-144fps isn't necessary for me. I prefer higher visual quality and resolution at 60fps. Even with an RTX 2080 Ti, I sometimes struggle with 4k. My intention was to maintain smooth performance within my G-Sync range. However, I've noticed fps drops that feel like stuttering.
My friend mentioned 1440p at 120fps, sorry for the mix-up. With VSync turned off it reaches 200+ frames per second. Activate all settings in the NV panel and push to the maximum. Your game should run at 60fps without any drops with the card you have. If there are any drops, it suggests the engine isn't well built.
If some games run better and don't dip below 60fps then I think there is nothing we can do. But if your really not busy and have free time to kill, then go into safe mode and run DDU "Display Driver uninstaller" then reboot into normal mode and install latest nVidia WHQL that just came out.
