Getting data from an old PC?

PC build just started
I haven’t moved any HDDs yet, but there’s a lot of data I need to transfer.
Can I link the two PCs in series using a crossover Ethernet cable? Will that work?
If I connect a new PC to the switch port, what settings do I need to enable so it can access the old PC’s HDDs?
Or should I use USB 3.0 ports instead? USB 3.0 might be faster than Ethernet for this task? ... Looking for the simplest method to move the data.

Simple 1: Link both devices to the identical router. Share a folder on one or the other, then paste the content.
Simple 2: Transfer your files to a USB flash drive or another external storage. Plug it into the new system and move the data there.

Or can we link them through USB 3.0 ports? ... USB3.0 would provide better performance than Ethernet? ... Just trying to find the simplest way to move the data. Please don't use the USB method.
Return to the old way and save all essential data onto a portable drive, because I think your older PC is still working.

I believe using an Ethernet cable requires only a hub, and then you can set up a shared folder on the network. It might be quicker than using a router, though I'm not sure. I recently purchased an external enclosure for a 250GB SATA M.2 drive, which is now my preferred method.

Value in classic methods, I can link up a backup HDD... but it would require additional effort and cabling, plus removal afterward. Maybe a simpler alternative could work.

The data size is almost 2 TB, making a Flash drive impractical since the biggest I own is only 25GB. Both devices will connect to the same Router (EE SamartHub2), and it seems like creating a shared folder on the new PC would make it visible on the old one — this process hasn’t been tried before. Is this something straightforward, or can you share the steps? The old PC runs Windows 10 Pro, while the new PC is Windows 11 Pro. Currently, no other devices are connected to the router.

Create a folder that is either visible or hidden, allowing the other system to recognize it. Copy and paste the link provided.

Both computers are linked to the same BT/EE hub.
Internet access for each individual PC is confirmed to be working properly.
To attempt enabling sharing, it would be ideal so I can view my W10 PC and use it on the W11 PC for data transfer.

On W10 PC
I navigated to File Explorer, chose my E:\ drive, right-clicked, selected "Give access to" then "Advanced Sharing".
The option to share this folder was checked, and I picked E:\ with everyone allowed in permissions.
Network Discovery was activated.

On W11 PC
I accessed C:\, clicked the appropriate options, confirmed sharing, and set permissions for everyone.
Network Discovery remains enabled.

Yet on both systems, I still cannot see the other machine, and I suspect there might be an issue.
