Getting a rift S or quest.
Getting a rift S or quest.
I'm really struggling with a decision. On one side, my PC setup—i5 3470, GTX 1060, 3GB and 8GB RAM—isn't sure if it can handle the Rift S, which makes me think about taking the quest. On the other hand, I prefer not to buy a VR headset for gaming but just for using a big screen. My home Wi-Fi isn’t great for streaming, so that pushes me toward the Rift S. It’s a tough choice since I can’t easily return it when I buy it (I live in Africa).
Thanks for your help.
Your device meets the basic requirements but falls short of optimal performance. The 1500x model is just enough, offering similar speed to a 3470, though it includes some features absent in the 3470. Memory details remain unclear. Fixing the Wi-Fi might be simpler if the issue lies with signal strength rather than bandwidth or latency. Repeaters are an affordable solution. If the network feed is problematic, a more robust connection would be necessary. Overall, the situation leans toward enhancing either hardware or WiFi to achieve better results.
In your case, I’d likely avoid purchasing additional gear and instead investigate the WiFi issues personally. Assessing costs would help determine next steps. If feasible, upgrading the computer could make the Rift S workable.
If you don’t intend to play games with it and just want to enjoy Big Screen, the Oculus Go offers a more affordable choice. However, if your internet speed isn’t sufficient for streaming, the difference between headsets becomes irrelevant as you’ll face a poor experience in Big Screen.
For using Big Screen mainly to display large virtual screens while watching movies you’ve saved, alternatives like the Rift S or Quest (with a Link cable) would be suitable. You should ensure your PC has a free USB 3.0 port for them to function, though your hardware should support it.
It might seem expensive to invest only in a small part of VR’s capabilities, but that’s up to you.
You might want to examine that WiFi situation too. It could face similar problems as the quest does.
