I've been thinking about this over the past months. Right now I'm using these components: R7 2700X, MSI B550 MagTomahawk, GTX 1660 Super, 32GB Corsair Vengeance LX, and DDR4 RAM. When I insert the RAM into slots 2 and 4 or 1 and 3, only half of it shows up in the BIOS. But when I put it in slot 3 and 4, it detects the full 32GB instead of just 16GB. In Task Manager it says 16GB allocated, but the top right shows 32GB total. It's confusing—am I seeing the right amount or is something else going on?
CPU-Z accurately displays the full 32GB memory. But why did you receive a B550 motherboard for a Ryzen 2700X? Such boards aren’t compatible—B550 models don’t support 1000-series or 2000-series processors, which won’t function correctly. Only 3000-series and 5000-series chips are supported.
Also as @-rascal- mentioned, the B550 board isn't officially compatible with 2700x. Good to have it running at all.
It seems the issue is with cpu-z displaying only Ryzen SOC information. It looks like an upgrade might be necessary soon. I managed to boost my 2400MHz RAM up to 3200MHz in single-channel mode, which suggests I was lucky with that setting. I didn’t expect complete removal of support for second-generation Ryzen chips—usually AMD handles older CPUs better, and this model might be around two years old at most.
Zen 2 was released in summer 2019. The B550 and A520 boards arrived later than the X570. They likely aimed to prevent a repeat of the B550 issue where Ryzen 5000 support wasn’t available with B450 or X470 boards. Updating the BIOS to enable Ryzen 5000 support on those boards would result in permanent loss of support for Ryzen 3000-series and older models. The situation with Mr. Bob Dole highlights a shift from a cautious "maybe" to a definitive "no" toward older Ryzen generations, possibly due to compatibility concerns. Regarding the B550 chipset, any significant differences compared to X570 might affect compatibility with older Ryzen CPUs, though this remains uncertain.
