I'm switching from a poor Netgear setup to a better Ubiquiti solution. I need a router that handles traffic without Wi-Fi and integrates smoothly with the AP. Should I pick a mid-range model or set up PF Sense on my NAS instead? Also, do I require two LAN ports for this configuration?
pfsense works well, but it depends on the specific hardware you use. Running a unified AP without more advanced features isn’t ideal—go with a Google Mesh Wi-Fi setup instead. I’ve found those reliable for my family. Personally, I run pfsense alongside various Unified Wireless devices; it’s more complex than Google Wi-Fi, but offers greater flexibility. I also manage many VLANs and several Wi-Fi networks, mainly to keep IoT devices separate.
R7 3800X built with ASRock B550M-ITX, 16GB DDR43600, GT1030, paired with a 120GB Samsung 850 Evo SSD boot drive plus four 10TB spinning drives. Hosting Ubuntu Server 20 and Plex. Avoid Google products for long-term needs; their history shows they may abandon projects. I already own the Unifi AP.
I’d set up a virtual environment for that issue and handle whatever tasks are needed. I run Proxmox as the main host, with several Ubuntu VMs running underneath. To move drives to Ubuntu, you’d need an HBA, which is around fifty dollars. You could run Ubuntu as your hypervisor, but Proxmox is better suited for this purpose. It can definitely manage it; it’s just Debian with KVM. Ideally, I’d explore Proxmox since it’s built for virtualization. PFSense is also solid software.
I’m unable to install any additional hardware. Since it’s an ITX model, there’s only one available slot, and it’s currently occupied by the graphics card.
