I've been playing a few modern games lately and I've noticed something that's gotten a bit on my nerves. What's up with all the freaking drug sequences in modern games? Farcry 4 was the worst so far. Multiple times throughout the game you were drugged and expected to fight through an "alternate" reality where there were demons or even the normal world with technicolor sky. Seriously... why do this? It COMPLETELY breaks immersion and no freaking freedom fighter would be getting high in the middle of a war. I completely (attempted) to avoid as many of those "missions" as possible. I did the two stoner's missions twice. The first time I said "ok, whatever, maybe the second time won't be bad." So I did the second one and nope... exact same crap. So I skipped the rest of their missions. I can see a bit of marijuana, but the "effects" during gameplay seem to be going for an "LSD" high. You don't run around being productive when you're high on LSD or mushrooms. You sit down and curl up or walk around acting like a total idiot. In all honesty these sequences give me headaches and whenever I'm in one all I can think of is "Oh god please let this stupid sequence end as quickly as possible. Where is the exit?" I'll go so far as avoiding fighting enemies simply to end the sequence faster. I wouldn't have thought much of it, but then playing the new Wolfenstein the other day there was ANOTHER drug sequence. Not a playable one thank goodness, but a COMPLETELY useless cutscene where you allow the local druggie to give you drugs (no questions asked) then listen to his music. WTF? What was the point of that cutscene in a game where you're supposed to be clinging on for life every day, fighting an extremely oppressive regime. And WHO the HELL would let someone else give them drugs with no questions asked? A fully trained killing machine soldier who has to be ready at a moment's notice? I think not. Even freaking mario maker has "bad mushrooms" where the screen gets wavy and the music gets weird. WTF? Why do game developers feel the need to include these things? They're not fun, they break immersion, and they're headache inducing.
If you don’t enjoy them, skip it. Not all games are designed for deep immersion—they’re built mainly to be enjoyable, like in Mario Maker.
Avoid playing FarCry 4. It's not meant for you. You don't need to enjoy it.
You can do a lot worst things in far cry 4 than take drugs. So personally I don't see the problem, games are fictional story's that are never totally realistic. The developer wanted that, so why not. its part of the game.
I'm not bothered by the issue of using substances. What bothers me is how they force you to act under the influence. It doesn't feel enjoyable at all.
Complaining about a feature that claims drugs break immersion, arguing developers aim for broader appeal rather than catering to specific preferences. If you disagree, consider skipping the game.
I've concluded my thoughts and stepped away from the discussion. Your comment didn't add value, so I'll leave now.
