You're mixing up the types of SSDs. There are two main kinds: SATA drives that connect via the ports on your motherboard and power supply, and M.2 drives that use a smaller connector on the board. The M.2 isn't the same as the PCIe X16 slots for graphics cards. Standard hard drives run on SATA power (the small ports near the bottom right of the board and cables from the PSU). I recommend buying the cheapest 2TB SSD available. Store your most used games on the 1TB SSD, and keep your OS and media files on the larger 2TB drive when space allows.
I suggest using a M.2 drive since that's what you currently have. For games, indie titles, casual games, and those with online asset streams work best on HDDs. I’m unsure about your M.2’s HMB status without specific tools, so consider using a dedicated HDD analysis app if available.
You can verify using the model name and the spreadsheet shared in the forums. We aren't certain if the player is using open world titles, and the cost gap between a 7200RPM 2tb SMR and an m.2 drive is notable. A 2tb 7200 - 55 USD and a 500GB m.2 NVMe also 55 USD. This applies to storage solutions, not boot drives; I'm confident the main games are on the SSD.

I have around 200 projects left. I just need more space to save games. I’ve been using the full delete-and-redownload process. I’m okay with getting another SSD since it’ll keep things cooler and quieter, but I’m not against HDDs if they don’t slow me down too much.
It really doesn’t affect much for cooling, but for speed and sound quality it depends on the games you play. For open-world titles like Nathan mentioned, an SSD would be better, though it’s nearly twice the price of a 500GB drive compared to a 2TB one versus an HDD.
