I've been attempting to switch my Intel i5 2400 to an Intel i5 3450 on my Dell Optiplex 990. The problem is that while the 2400 uses Sandy Bridge, the 3450 runs Ivy Bridge, and it appears the 990 isn't compatible with that architecture. Yet some people claim it can work. I'm holding off until I get confirmation—please let me know if this upgrade is feasible for you!

Sandy Bridge was the only version available. The chipset didn’t officially back any features beyond that.

https://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(ch...press.html Yeah, Rad has it. That chipset doesn't support anything beyond 2XXX CPUs The socket will fit it but the chipset can't understand it. If you're in the market for an inexpensive upgrade, I'd look into grabbing an old workstation rocking an i7-4770. They usually run 100$ on ebay and you can salvage your RAM and storage. This is the box I used to upgrade my grandparents from a i3-2100 so gramma could play mahjong without ads https://www.ebay.com/itm/266175940527?

It’s possible a BIOS update might fix certain issues, but it isn’t guaranteed to solve everything.

Certain BIOS versions accommodate newer processors, though this applies mainly to devices running Ivy Bridge and later.

The gap in performance between the i5-2400 and i5-3450 is minimal, meaning upgrading won’t significantly impact your results.
