Gaming performance drops to low frames after installing NVIDIA Experience. Need assistance!
Hey there, welcome! This is my first visit, and I’m looking for some guidance. A few days back I purchased a new gaming laptop – the ASUS ROG Strix 702 Vi. It comes with a GTX 1080, G-Sync, and an i7-7700HQ processor. At first, I enjoyed playing my favorite games with high frame rates. But recently, after installing Nvidia Experience, my performance took a hit. In Borderlands 2, FPS dropped from about 200 to a maximum of 75. Fallout 4 went from 200/300 down to just 36. I tried fixing it by resetting the settings, but nothing worked. I even reset everything back to defaults, yet the issue persisted. I tried turning off the power, plugging it in again, and rebooting multiple times, but no improvement.
Later, someone on Reddit suggested disabling certain Nvidia Experience features like “auto optimize game” and “battery saving.” I tried that too, but it didn’t help much. Then I went another route – reinstalling Steam, clearing the experience folder, and checking the in-game settings for physics effects. Still stuck at 75 FPS. I also tested another game, which remained at the same frame rate.
I noticed something odd: the physics effect options in the game menu were no longer available. It’s frustrating because I miss those smooth sessions. The laptop’s performance feels limited, like it’s only running at 20% of its potential. The CPU temps are around 52°C and the GPU around 50°C, but the fans aren’t spinning fast enough. It seems gaming speed is being throttled down significantly.
I’m hoping someone can help me figure out how to fix this or at least understand what’s going on with my setup. Thanks for your time!
You're certain the in-game options stayed consistent? GFE usually adjusts settings during installation.
GFE targets roughly 40 frames per second previously. That generally means boosting detail. 40 FPS is also the lowest frame rate needed for G-SYNC to activate, according to what I recall. Have you updated your driver? If yes, revert to the earlier version. If NVIDIA drivers are problematic, it’s not uncommon!
System restore can help you recover... Give it a try. Uninstall and then run a reg cleaner before restarting. When you do, pick the install clean option and uncheck the flipping GFX setting. It often conflicts with Windows Game Mode, which you might want to disable as well.
I tried everything you suggested. The issue remains unresolved. Do you have another suggestion?
