Progress is happening fast. Trying to judge old tech against current standards is pointless. The outcome is always improvement. What counts is maintaining value for your money while staying up to date. The latest USB version is USB C/Thunderbolt, unlike USB 3.0 or 2.1 before. SATA 3 was then, PCIe 5.0 M.2 is now, and PCIe 5.0 graphics slots exist today while PCIe 3.0 slots were the norm. When you look at older models versus modern ones, the range of features has shrunk significantly. A $125 motherboard used to be a premium item, now it's just average. Even adjusted for inflation, it should cost around $165 today—not $250 or more. And those older boards often included a debug display, a feature now rare on high-end systems.

You're mainly noticing the price jump across different board types. It seems you can get a simple board for the same cost as a high-end one, and there are options to skip buying any boards altogether.

No? In 2013 a $2000 machine was considered top-of-the-line, now it's clearly mid-range. Looking further back might make things seem balanced, but I don't believe comparing 25 years is accurate.

They have surprisingly solid cores. AM4 backward support makes AM5 quite demanding. The IHS thickness and their ability to handle lapping are notable. CPU temperature is now the main issue. We’ve consistently chosen the processor with a slight performance edge, even if it means more heat. Under voltage improvements in Zen 3 and Zen 4 actually boost efficiency, sometimes without sacrificing speed. Alder Lake and Raptor Lake also perform well with lower voltages.

To get better deals, consumers need to stop purchasing new items. By spending your money, you’re agreeing these high costs are acceptable. They’re not acceptable. Stop buying their products, prices will decrease. Keep in mind, they rely on our money and labor—stop working for them.

Maintaining a comfortable temperature should be achievable with standard configurations, avoiding the need for excessive voltage adjustments. These are merely temporary fixes, though they don’t solve the underlying issue. I’ve noticed that fine-tuning Ryzen 7000 processors can make a big difference, and while the overheating concern seems more tied to Intel’s design choices than AMD’s, even after reducing the IHS, JaysTwoCents managed to keep temperatures below 90°C on a 360mm AIO with his 7950X. I’m curious about how a Noctua D-15 would perform after fine-tuning. I intend to reduce or fine-tune my 7800X3D to test if stable air-cooled overclocking is possible. The drawback of 3D V-Cache CPUs is that their cache reacts strongly to both voltage and temperature, which means the 7800X3D typically has lower boost frequencies compared to the 7700X.
