Hello! I faced some odd issues with Windows 10 and chose to reset my PC. Since I’ve been using Mint on an older machine before, I thought it might work well as my main operating system. I’m curious—does anyone know if someone has experience running games like Skyrim or Persona 4 on Linux? Also, I saw that GeForce drivers can be tricky on Linux; is that accurate? Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the reply! I viewed the video while looking up information, which led me to ask others about their experiences playing games on Linux. This helped me understand whether it’s a good choice or just another Windows reinstall.

Vanilla Skyrim SE runs fine. Making changes is another matter. I quit the attempt to fix SKSE64. I haven’t played Persona 4. I’ve never had problems with NVidia drivers.

Thanks in advance! I usually enjoy Vanilla original Skyrim (not the SE version), so it seems fine. If the original doesn’t work, I can give it a shot in SE too. Great to hear—I’m feeling more hopeful now, even with an older card.

It varies with the games you enjoy. Single-player titles generally run smoothly on Linux. For multiplayer enthusiasts, consider dual-booting. GeForce drivers are custom packages; placing them outside the kernel causes problems. Some operating systems don’t support them, leading to odd behavior. There are free drivers available, but they often lag behind. AMD provides excellent free and open-source drivers and contributes actively. Their drivers closely match non-free options, supporting open standards. NVIDIA, on the other hand, prioritizes commercial interests and complicates free driver adoption. Linus Torvalds and NVIDIA have a notable background. Beyond software freedom, compatibility matters—Pop OS works out of the box, while Mint may need additional packages. It’s only a concern if you value open systems or experiment with your setup. For long-term use, upgrading to an AMD card is wise unless NVIDIA changes its approach.

Thanks! You enjoy single-player online games but sometimes encounter unfamiliar online features. You're considering AMD drivers since they're open source, but right now you're sticking with NVIDIA for now. You mentioned looking into alternatives and wondering if Ubuntu (or Mint) is a better choice for gaming performance.

Essentially Ubuntu, Pop OS, and Mint run on the same base OS with a common desktop environment. Pop OS includes the newest drivers by default. Both Mint and Ubuntu perform well for gaming. Just install the latest drivers, Steam, and Lutris. The Lutris wiki offers detailed setup instructions: https://github.com/lutris/docs/blob/mast...Drivers.md. For optimization tips, check out https://christitus.com/ultimate-linux-gaming-guide/. Adding Mangohud makes a strong gaming configuration with Linux Mint. Mint supports gaming as long as compatible titles are available. Explore the lists at https://www.protondb.com/ and https://lutris.net/ for compatibility information. If most of your games run smoothly on Linux, they should work on Linux Mint. For assistance, join the Lutris Discord (https://discord.gg/dmZuXw) and the Gaming on Linux Discord (https://discord.gg/hf4ZNt).

I'll look into those manuals for configuration, and use protodb for the games I enjoy the most.
