I doubt it will affect performance much, though I can't say for sure since I haven't used Windows in nearly 15 years. What I've done is set up MX Linux and Mageia on a USB 2.0 drive. Even though USB 2.0 is quite slow compared to modern drives, benchmarks show how fast my hardware actually performs. This happens because most apps stay in RAM rather than the disk. I wouldn't suggest USB 2.0, but a USB 3.0 or better from SanDisk with at least 130 MB/s read speed should be fine. In the worst case, your load times might be slightly slower, but it's crucial to pick a faster USB 3.0 with sufficient IOPS for smooth game loading.
