(Gaming) Lower clock speed improves performance! (GPU)
I have some thoughts on adjusting my GPU settings. My card consistently outperforms my CPU, but I’ve noticed a trade-off when I lower the clock speeds. By underclocking the VRAM, core clock, and voltage to match my CPU, I see a noticeable boost in performance—5 to 15 frames per second in games. Stability also improves significantly. I’m using an AMD Athlon 64 x2 with 5600 MHz, a Geforce GTX 260, 4GB RAM, and a 500W power supply. My system runs smoothly across various games, though I sometimes hit lower FPS when overclocking. My current settings are around 576 MHz clock, 999 MHz memory, and 1113 mV voltage. After underclocking, I get 450 MHz clock, 750 MHz memory, and 1030 mV voltage. Many users report similar results—lowering settings can enhance stability and frame rates. What adjustments would you recommend, and why do you think underclocking helps? Thanks!
Perhaps due to your panel, what version are you currently using? It might not require additional frames, which could explain its stability when underclocking.
Maybe because of your panel... which one are you using now? It might not need more frames, which could explain why it stays stable when you underclock it.
Sorry, I'm not very familiar with computer terms. What do you mean by panel?
(Extra info: Once I underclocked some games, they would crash often completely stopping mid-game, but now I can play for hours without issues.)
Maybe your card isn't designed for high voltage... that's why it crashes often. Underclocking might help it run longer as long as you need. What is your PSU brand and model?
I use a 1920x1080 and a 1024x768 utility monitor, both work well now (had issues before).
PSU: Rosewill Stallion Series RD500-2DB 500W ATX12V Power Supply
I never considered this... the card is quite old and may not handle the voltage it used to.

yes dude.. thats really matter..
but still u can play the game or do what ever u want..
u dont really need to upgrade..
but if ur no satisfied.. there so much budget tyoe MID RANGE GPU out there..
CHEERS dude!
oh no, im perfectly satisfied where i am now. just think its interesting how an underclock improved performance. if anything ill get a quad core and another gtx 260 to run sli. the gtx 260 has about 75% of the performance of a gtx 600 series card (acording to gpuboss.com). not bad at all for a card so old.
thats all mate, thanks for the input!

Yeah, that’s really important.. but you’re still free to play the game or do whatever you want.
You don’t really have to upgrade, but if you’re not happy...
there’s a lot of mid-range GPU options out there.
Cheers!
Oh no, I’m totally fine where I am. It’s cool to see how an underclock boosted performance. If I ever need something better, I’ll get a quad core and another GTX 260 to run it. The GTX 260 is about 75% as fast as a GTX 600 card (according to gpuboss.com). Not bad for such an old card.
That’s all, thanks for the thoughts!
YOUR WELCOME MATE.. hope I can help a bit
