I’m feeling quite uncertain right now and don’t know the best next steps. It seems my system has been experiencing unexpected crashes lately, marked by a black screen and loss of monitor signal. Audio sometimes plays on a single note while other times it works normally, but I can’t restore the visuals. This usually forces a manual restart to get things back on track. For most of the time, games ran smoothly without lag or frame drops, but recently performance has dropped significantly—browsers load slowly, games start choppy, even basic titles like Zenless Zone Zero aren’t running well on a 4080 GPU. My specs are: Ryzen 7 7700X, RTX 4080, 32GB DDR5 RAM, 850W PSU. I’ve tried lowering game settings, using different drivers, cleaning the system, and even undervolting the GPU, but nothing seems to help. Antivirus scans came back clean, and I rolled back my Windows a few days ago. I’m worried this might be a GPU problem, but it’s affecting everything from simple apps to complex games. Any advice or guidance would be really valuable.

Found an instance of one of many errors: The details for Event ID 13 from source nvlddmkm aren't available. It seems the tool that triggers this event isn't installed or the setup is damaged. You can reinstall or fix the tool locally. If the issue started on another machine, the display data must have been saved with the event. The attached information included: Device Video3 Graphics Exception on GPC 5 ZROP 0: HUNG_ON_NIL_THREAD_RDAT The message resource exists but isn't found in the table. Everyone reports similar issues, though with varying Graphics Exception details.

The event notification points to the Nvidia graphics driver as the issue source. Turn off any overclocking or XMP settings, undo recent modifications and set them back to their best defaults.

1. Attempt to revert the Nvidia graphics driver. Use Windows key + X, choose Device Manager, expand the display adapter, right-click your Nvidia graphics and select the rollback option if available.

2. Use DDU to clean and reinstall graphics drivers. Download the latest version from the manufacturer’s support site, run the Clean and Restart utility, then reinstall.

3. Update or reinstall the chipset drivers. Obtain the newest driver from the supplier’s support page and install it, then restart your system.

Remember: This guidance comes from a non-Microsoft source. Be cautious of ads promoting products that may be PUP (Potentially Unwanted Products). Always verify details before downloading.

I recently attempted a few solutions and continue to face significant performance problems when loading Zenless and Satisfactory. I'm reviewing the Chipset Driver recommendation, but I'm not sure what it refers to—GPU chipset, motherboard, processor? I've tried all the suggestions you mentioned, yet nothing has helped.

Well, so far, I don't even know where to start with the hardware. Especially since I don't have spares of anything just lying around. The GPU seems like it'd be the primary suspect but, at the same time, would they even accept an RMA for an error such as this? Like the card "functions", in the vaguest sense of the word if all these problems are stemming from the GPU, and that might be enough for them to turn around and say "nah". I did suspect that it might've been a fan problem, but it turns out it does turn off the fan when it's idling on the Desktop and not under any particular load, so that's all running as expected. It's just this whole mess of performance and loading not being nearly up to the par expected of a 4080 toting machine. Since there's no visibly obvious indication that there is a hardware issue, I'm going to take the last resort of clean installing windows, then from there I guess I gotta see if this GPU RMA will be permitted so I can try and get the ball rolling and hope that if it is the GPU that is JUST the GPU.

I recently made progress and the system is functioning properly again. I restored the BIOS settings after seeing the CPU stuck at 800mhz in Task Manager and the BIOS. Returning to the default settings (other than fan curves) and rebooting, everything appears to be operating as intended. I’m not sure if this resolves the Black Screening issue, but at least performance is back, which is a positive step. Could you offer any insights on what this could indicate or why it happened? I haven’t adjusted the CPU clock before and don’t think it was set accidentally.

Clear example of letting software adjust firmware comes with the risk that even less skilled developers might accidentally damage your motherboard, not just hardware makers. This highlights how such settings could have been introduced by a glitch or hidden power configuration in outdated software.

It would have been really funny if the PC version of Metaphor had been behind this all along. By "hilarious," I mean completely crazy. I'll keep watching from here and check if the problems continue (at least I'll return to where I thought I was before the issues started). I'm hoping for some positive updates soon, though I'm not sure it'll be easy to figure out what's really going on.
