I was wondering why games don't appear better when using higher settings, since the main differences seem to be shadows, reflections, and anti-aliasing. Am I missing something? Could it be that texture settings have no effect or that other unspecified settings aren't making a difference?
Moving from low to medium is a noticeable improvement, but going from medium to high or higher often isn't as substantial. Usually, the main gains come from shadows and anti-aliasing rather than other factors.
The texture files tend to remain unchanged in size.
However, the actual impact depends on the specific game and circumstances, so we can't provide a definitive answer without more details about your situation.
the games i tested included forte horizon 3, forte motorsport 6, apex nfs2016, nfs payback, nfs heat watchdogs, hitman: goty mafia, just cause, the crew, life is strange, and others. the only differences were minor, mostly in ghost recon wild lands, gta v, and drb2. that's about it.
also the question i'm working on is whether i should give up frames per second for extremely low quality.
The settings being compared are between high and ultra, noting minimal variation, and between low and high, highlighting a significant contrast.
for the games i discussed there was no variation, i compared textures across low, medium, and high settings. after that, improvements were minimal and no significant differences were observed. i increased shadows up to ultra and beyond in some titles, but results remained consistent. reflections and water quality stayed the same except for rdr and gta, where no change was noticed. other settings also showed no impact overall.
For what it's worth, the Forza titles only begin showing more noticeable quality variations once you reach the high settings. They're mainly designed for consoles, so even at their top configurations, they won't appear significantly improved compared to the high setting, which is the intended target for Xbox One releases.
