Gameplay at 5900x resolution with a temperature of 80°C
I'm at 5900x temp 80 in games, using 40% of it. My specs are 5900x 3070 980 pro. Is this typical?
It could be a bit warm, but usually within normal limits. Zen 3 tends to heat up more, particularly when using many cores. The situation is influenced by elements such as your case layout, additional cooling from fans, the fan settings on your radiator (like push/pull), and room temperature. Some of these aspects might need tuning. You may also want to undervolt it using a curve optimizer—it will cool down significantly and often improves performance from the start.
Check your thermostat settings and ensure it's set correctly. If the temperature is too high, consider adjusting it or using a fan to cool down the room.
Precision Boost Overdrive now offers a more refined performance with Zen 3. Earlier versions focused mainly on increasing chip power as long as thermal limits were respected, which could raise heat. Today, PBO2 includes an optimizer that enables higher boosts without significantly affecting thermal performance, and it can even assist in cooling (as mentioned with undervolting).
Check if the temperature is typical for an NZXT X73 with H500 under 40% load.
