On Christmas I placed an order for an i5 9600k, a fresh 240ml air cooler and a Corsair Platinum 1000W power supply. After setting everything up, my in-game performance lagged behind my previous i3 8100 after applying all possible fixes and consulting with a friend. We determined the H310 motherboard was likely the culprit, so I switched to an ASRock Phantom Gaming Z390 board. Sadly, it didn’t resolve the problem, especially when paired with the CPU’s excessive heat usage. I ended up swapping it out for a new one. Once the new i5 9600k arrived, I observed odd behavior during CPU-intensive tasks like Cinebench R20 and video rendering in DaVinci Resolve. The CPU itself ran perfectly, achieving higher scores than online averages by roughly 50-100 points, and consistent 100% usage also boosted video work. However, games remained problematic—I saw better performance on my friend’s system with the same setup. One friend claims the issue might be with my GPU, as their benchmark showed poor performance but improved after a different test. I’ve tried everything obvious: updated drivers, BIOS, swapped power supply to a gold-rated 650W unit. No OC or XMP settings were used. Temperatures stayed below 50°C under load. Have you looked at the temps while playing? It could be that the GPU is working hard and causing slower performance.
It might be the GPU issue. Also, enable XMP settings on RAM to potentially improve gaming performance, as faster RAM speeds can enhance CPU efficiency and boost FPS.
Gpu performance remains steady, tracked via ASUS GPU Tweak 2. What I mentioned is that a friend with a comparable setup lacks XMP support and achieves higher FPS, Martin2132
