Game performance drops significantly under heavy load.
I got a new monitor this Christmas (msi 2k, 240hz) and noticed my PC stutters in games now. It doesn’t happen all the time and some titles are worse than others. I checked Task Manager and saw high power usage while gaming. Recently I started playing Fields of Mirage which should run smoothly since it’s similar to Stardew Valley and caps at 60fps. I’m confused about the problem, tried reinstalling drivers and other fixes but nothing helped. I suspect the issue might be with my power supply—it’s only a 550w unit but I’m not sure. Any advice would be really appreciated. Current setup: Ryzen 5 5600G 2 x 8GB DDR4, Fog Strix B450, Eagle OC 3060, 12GB SSD, M.2 Samsung 970, Corsair 550w, 80plus bronze.
It’s unlikely the PSU is the issue. Your setup should stay under 500w even when under load. The 5600g typically won’t exceed 125w. The GPU usually stays below 200w. Components like NVMe SSDs should consume no more than 5w, and other devices such as audio and USB should add very little power. Unless you have many RGB lights, multiple motorized HDDs, and numerous USB connections, your system shouldn’t exceed the available capacity. Start by verifying the connection: ensure the HDMI or DP cable is plugged into the 3060, not the motherboard directly. Next, consider disabling the iPGU in Windows Device Manager if you’re comfortable with it—it stops Windows from trying to use it instead of the 3060. Also, confirm your display settings match your monitor’s specifications. Windows handles this well by default, but adjustments may be needed. VRR and FPS scaling should already be enabled unless you change them. This should clarify things.
