Game performance drops following CPU, MDBD, and CPU fan modifications
Hey, last night I upgraded my CPU, motherboard, and fan. Before that, I had an MDB GIGABYTE B365M D3H with an Intel Coffee Lake CPU, Core i5 9400F at 2.9GHz, and I switched to a GIGABYTE A520M DS3H V2 with AM4 socket and an AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800X, 36MB, 4.7GHz. My current configuration is: AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800X, 36MB, 4.7GHz GIGABYTE A520M DS3H V2 SSD Kingston A2000 1TB PCI Express 3.0 x4 M.2 2280 HyperX Fury Black 16GB DDR4 at 2666MHz CL16 Dual Channel, RGB case, Aerocool Shard, Seasonic S12III-650, 80+ Bronze, 650W PowerColor Radeon RX 6650 XT Red Devil 8GB GDDR6, 1×28-bit.
Initially everything worked well. I tested it with Cyberpunk and it ran smoothly at 120 frames, but after three minutes it began to stutter heavily. Sounds became distorted and there were noticeable stutters roughly every three seconds. Other titles like CS2 also showed similar issues. I’ll share a video if you want, but it’s quite bad.
I checked temperatures: the CPU reached about 71°C and the GPU stayed under 60°C. Everything was fresh Windows. My first thought was RAM—my current setup isn’t ideal, with a max frequency of 2666MHz and two different brands. I tried an 8X2 at 3200MHz, but the problem persisted.
I updated BIOS, looked into forums, and disabled some options in BIOS that seemed to cause stutters. Still nothing after all this time. I changed power plans, re-seated the CPU and GPU, updated drivers, and even ran a BIOS update. I also tried different power plans and reseating components. All drivers were up to date, and nothing changed.
I ran several benchmarks and everything seemed normal. The old CPU and MDB setup worked fine, so it was a bit frustrating. Recently, I noticed a hotspot on the GPU. I used FurMark to stress test it and checked temperatures with MSI Afterburner. The GPU was getting quite hot—92°C after a few minutes—and the global GPU temperature was 65°C. I updated to Windows 11, but it didn’t help.
Despite cleaning the system and updating everything, I still faced issues. I’m really hoping someone can help me out. Thank you in advance for your time.
Hello. Currently I have four plates, arranged in pairs, as described in the longer post. I started with just two, played the game and noticed stutters. Then I rearranged them, tested again and still had issues. I also experimented with a 2x8 GB drive at 3200MHz, but the game still stuttered.
I've been working all day and feel exhausted. I didn't notice that the MDBD TMPIN4 temperature exceeds 110°C. It might be a problem? Could the motherboard handle this CPU?
That sounds like a sensor that isn't connected. 110-114°C is a common max temp which you see if it's not connected. Did you clean install the OS with the new board?
Hi. Yes, it worked on a clean OS. I don’t believe there’s a sensor issue since the temperatures adjust with load. After spending a long time thinking, this makes more sense. I’m not sure, but the VRM might be connected to the GPU and could be causing the audio stuttering and throttling. If you only check the main GPU and CPU temps, everything looks normal, but this one seems to freeze. Placing the VRM under the GPU helps explain it. It’s just a theory at the moment.
Hello, the problem was resolved—MBDB was the cause. The A520M DS3H V2 works with Ryzen 7 5800X according to specs. The TMPIN4 reached 111°C, triggering thermal throttling. I replaced it with a Gigabyte B550 GGAMING X V2, and everything is now functioning properly. Thanks again!
