The 290x matches the performance of the rx580, just slightly more than double its power. AMD previously had a suitable macroarchitecture for computing tasks compared to Nvidia's gaming-oriented design. They are now preparing to transition to their upcoming macroarchitecture and the next version of GCN.

yes, i also have a powercolor pc s+ r9 290, which works just as well as a 290x
