Game issues occur during play, causing stuttering or frame drops.
Hello, I have an i712700k without an OC and an MSI 4080 running stock. It has 32GB RAM and a 5600 MHz CPU. Sometimes in Apex Legends I experience stutters and frame drops, showing around 200 FPS instead of the usual 240. The drop feels much more significant than just a few frames. Anyone with similar issues or any advice would be appreciated?
Adjust your power management to prioritize peak performance in the NVIDIA control panel under "Manage 3D settings." Applying MSI Afterburner with maximum power and temperature limits may improve frame consistency. If this doesn't help, increasing core voltage will raise power draw slightly and cause a minor temperature rise, but it won't be extreme. These cards are tightly controlled, so such adjustments are limited. If outcomes remain unsafe, you can reset the settings.
It seems the configuration should work fine at lower settings, but you're still facing issues. The graphics card might be the limiting factor, so boosting its performance could help.
Checking your setup details: Are you using 1080p? If not, what resolution are you playing in? What are your monitor specifications? How much CPU power is the GPU handling on average? Are you in windowed mode, borderless, or fullscreen? Is G-sync enabled and is it set to G-sync ultimate? Are you taking advantage of ultra-low latency settings (NVIDIA control panel)? Do you have any overlays such as RTX tuners, Steam, EA Play, NVIDIA, or Xbox? Have you imposed a strict frame rate cap?
It seems like you're dealing with performance issues at 1080p with a 4080. It's tough, especially in competitive games like Apex, where every frame counts. Upgrading RAM might help, but the 12th Gen D5 controller isn't ideal either. A better CPU could make a difference, though it might not be worth the investment compared to your overall setup. Upgrading just for one game feels like a waste of effort. The cards also struggle when not fully loaded and don’t perform well at higher resolutions. Going to 1440p could be an option, but it’s not a guaranteed fix. I haven’t found a reliable way around the framerate limits using launch commands on EA or Steam.
Sync is displayed on the monitor or not? Since I don’t have it, I think the CPU might be the issue. The load on the CPU seems around 50 during gameplay, and since I didn’t overclock, maybe I should try that. For this card to perform well, you’d likely need a high workload—perhaps increasing graphics settings.
CPU bottleneck appears in various ways, and not all are easy to spot. CPU load is frequently mentioned, but the situation can be more complex. It might relate to instruction per cycle (IPC) and single-core performance, especially when managing many threads. Cache usage also plays a role. Overclocking with e-cores isn't ideal or straightforward. Boosting graphics might help, but I believe upgrading your display is more effective. While I can't promise a fix, improving your setup will likely make a big difference—particularly if you're using a 4080. Also, keep in mind you're running Apex, which gets updated often. Poor updates can cause performance drops, and competitive games demand high frame rates, making them CPU-intensive regardless of hardware choices. I think the main issue here is more about software than hardware.
Sorry for the delayed reply. I recently tried overclocking the CPU, which took some time to get right. Since I mainly play FPS games like Counter-Strike, I ended up using a 1080p monitor. I believe a 1440p display wouldn’t be ideal for those games. You mentioned my issue is likely software-related—could you clarify more? Regarding hardware, would it make sense to downgrade to something like an RTX 4070 instead?
I don't see why 1440p isn't ideal for those games. Perhaps focus on monitor size instead of resolution—it's simpler to monitor a full 24" screen at 1080p without moving around much compared to a 27" 1440p setup. Yet some players can handle 1440p in competitive shooters without issues. That's not an issue for them. All related to windows, drivers, programs, or the game itself. By the way, you didn't answer that question: "Try (separated and/or cumulative) : Disable any overlay you have a cap framerate at 200 If the game has a render scale (I don't play Apex), push it beyond 100%." As explained again, remember you're playing Apex, which gets updated often. Poor updates with bad performance can occur, and you have little control over that. I don't think downgrading is necessary unless you want to get a cheaper model. But if you can return it and save money, maybe consider it. At least it would look better at 1080p? Still, stutters might remain the same. If it's a software problem, it could cause the same issue.
