Hi There, I've been playing Starfield lately and really want to customize it. I've been making regular Steam backups so I can easily restore a clean save. But these backups have been problematic—extremely slow and causing performance issues while the process runs. I experience lag, unresponsiveness, stutters, and even occasional freezes. I checked the Task Manager and everything looks normal: low disk usage with some spikes, CPU usage around 30-40% which seems typical for my setup. Still, no clear cause appears.

My system specs are solid: 12700k, DDR5 5600Mhz, 990GB 1TB (boot), 980GB 1TB (installed), 970GB 1TB (backup), 3080ti motherboard, 1000W power supply. It feels like something beyond hardware limitations might be at play. I also notice similar stuttering when connecting my external SSD to the front port, but it works fine with the back port. Not sure if these are connected or related.

I’m hoping someone can help me figure this out. If anyone has any suggestions, that would be really appreciated. I’d love to use this feature with Steam and other tools, but it’s quite frustrating right now. Thanks for your time!

Several elements influence game stuttering. Your system's state plays a key role. Issues like overheating computers, weak graphics cards, insufficient memory, and CPU limitations can lead to stuttering while playing games. To resolve this, consider upgrading your hardware.

I just wanted to confirm, I wasn't playing any game. I was performing a Steam backup of a title. While doing that, I was also writing this thread and listening to music on Discord, etc. There wasn't a heavy workload. The situation is very well cooled, so overheating isn't a concern. The stuttering was happening, and I can recreate it by backing up the game through Steam again.

Have you attempted to reinstall Steam or created a backup on another storage device?
