Game FPS limits itself to your screen refresh speed
Recently I started revisiting some games I used to play with friends, going back to the Minecraft era if you remember. I reinstalled Minecraft and played for a while. Initially, everything worked well. My system specs are decent enough to handle the game—GTX 1650 Super, an Intel i5-9400f with six cores and 16 GB RAM. I was averaging around 200-240 FPS even with busy visuals. The issue began when my FPS dropped abruptly to 60 frames. It wasn’t just normal frame drops; it was a sudden, complete freeze as if VSync switched on unexpectedly. Even when I turned off VSync and limited the game to 60 FPS, the experience remained smooth with minimal input lag. I checked all settings—VSync wasn’t enabled, frame rate was capped at 240—but nothing changed. It affected not just Minecraft but other titles like osu!, Geometry Dash, Marvel Rivals, and Valorant. Games from the older days seemed to handle it better. I could temporarily disable it by pressing Alt+Tabbing or using F11 twice to switch back, but the problem would return after a couple of minutes. If anyone has ideas or encountered similar issues, please let me know. Thanks. Edited September 29, 2025 by syc I omitted some key details.
Check if G-Sync is active in the Nvidia control panel. If it is, disable it for games you don’t need. For other games, turn it off directly on the display. It may be labeled as Freesync or Adaptive Sync on the display OSD.
Thanks for the info. It seems G-Sync is likely turned off, as I couldn’t find any way to enable it. I checked the 3D settings for games and general programs, making sure VSync was off, but nothing stood out. Looking at my monitor’s OSD settings didn’t reveal any adaptive sync features either. Since my monitor is pretty old, that probably explains the issue.
