I just needed to check my quarters at the institute, but it didn’t recognize me there. It’s unclear what to do since I can’t move forward without it.

Make sure you're in the correct location and then use a console command to set the goal to finish. It's best to save the game beforehand since these instructions can sometimes ruin saves in Skyrim.
