I built a PC a few months ago and am attempting to play Horizon: Forbidden West on it. I can reach the main menu, but when trying to start a new game, the application crashes to the desktop.
In the system log, there are three entries under WHEA-Logger for "Corrected Hardware Error" reported by the processor core:
- Translate Lookaside Buffer Error (Processor APIC ID 16)
- Internal Parity Error (Processor APIC ID 16)
- Cache Hierarchy Error (Processor APIC ID 16)
At first, this PC was bought as a prebuilt unit in 2019, but I have since replaced all components. The current specifications are:
- Gigabyte AORUS Z790 Elite X Ice Motherboard
- BIOS version F4h
- Intel Core i9 14900k
- Gigabyte RTX 4070Ti
- 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5
- 2x32GB modules
- 6600MT/s (BIOS lists 4800MT/s)
- No XMP enabled
- DIMM slots 2 & 4
- Windows 10 Home v.22H2
- Build 19045.4291
- Service pack 1000.19056.1000.0
I have tried the following:
- Updating BIOS from version F2 to F4h
- Checking driver updates
- Running memtest86
- Enabling XMP
- Using DIMM slots 1 & 3 (PC won’t boot)
- Setting shader cache to 10GB in NVIDIA Control Panel
- Verifying game file integrity in Steam
I’m really puzzled about the problem. All other games run fine. Based on Steam reviews, no one seems to have the same issue, so I’m unsure where I might be going wrong. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
Updating the BIOS from F2 to F4h isn't visible in any PCB revision listed. It seems they removed it due to stability issues. Attempt to reflash to version F3, reset CMOS by unplugging from power and screen, then remove the battery, hold the power button for 30 seconds, and replace it after 30 minutes.
It's quite odd that the BIOS version F4h is missing, since I downloaded it and flashed it the day I first posted. They must have simply removed it. I plan to revert it back to check the outcome.
I should also mention that it was recommended to turn off DLSS. I did so, but the game remains very unstable. It might work for a short time before crashing—ranging from ten minutes to several hours—and in the worst cases, it could cause my PC to shut down abruptly without a full blue screen.
An update. No resolution yet, even after trying benchmarks with both Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility and 3DMark. Both tests failed the CPU check on default settings, and I've seen my PC crash occasionally. I'm considering sending it back in for a replacement.
