Game crashes to desktop with error 0xc0000005?
Hello there
I’m facing a really annoying problem with certain Steam titles—Risk of Rain 2 and DayZ. They crash to desktop within about five minutes after launching. Sometimes it freezes completely, forcing me to restart the PC, while other times it just stops for a brief moment before resuming. The Event Viewer shows a 0xc0000005 error, which means an access violation. This issue has only appeared recently, and I haven’t made any system upgrades lately. Occasionally, I manage to play for around an hour and a half, but most of the time it ends abruptly.
I’ve tried several solutions already:
- Reinstalling the games and checking their integrity
- Updating or reinstalling graphics drivers
- Running memtest86 and Windows Memory Diagnostic (both passed)
- Running Steam with administrator privileges
- Turning off the Windows Firewall
- Using sfc /scannow and chkdsk
- Playing in windowed mode and reducing graphics settings
While playing Risk of Rain, I noticed the RAM usage stays steady at around 20% even during gameplay. The CPU usage varies slightly but never exceeds 20%, while the memory remains consistent until a crash occurs.
Here’s my system setup:
CPU: i7 9700k (stock clock)
RAM: G.Skill 32GB (16GB x 2) @ 3200MHz
Motherboard: MSI Z390 Gaming Plus
GPU: GeForce RTX 3060ti 8GB
Power Supply: CoolerMaster 1000w Platinum
Storage: Samsung 840, 860 & 870 250GB, 1TB and 2TB SSDs
If anyone has suggestions on how to resolve this, I’d really appreciate it! I’m at my limit.
Where are your temperatures? This is happening often, so cleaned dust from the past six months.
Your CPU can handle 2666mhz RAM, and you're in the overclock range at 3200mhz.
Does your CPU have an integrated graphics card? Make sure it's turned off in Bios. Windows 11 and newer require full switch controls.
