Game crashes on black screen during playtime
Hello, I recently built a new PC about two months ago. At first, everything seemed fine since my gaming sessions weren’t long. But when I play Halo Infinite, Jedi: Fallen Order, or Call of Duty, the game crashes to a black screen with no options—just a full reboot. Call of Duty on Multiplayer 2 tends to fail faster than the others. It started during match creation and now also appears in the menus. After reinstalling Windows on Friday, I was able to play Call of Duty all weekend until Sunday evening when it crashed again. Do you know if there’s some hardware monitoring software that can log crashes after they happen? I’m not sure if overheating is the issue since my case is still open and I’m running games at 2K with unlimited FPS. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Updated graphics drivers and reinstalled Windows are already done. Call of Duty is on the SSD, while Halo and Jedi are on the HDDs. Hardware: Phantom Gaming 6900X, CPU 13600k, RAM 32GB, Vulcan DDR5 5600MHz, ASROC Z790 Pro, storage: 2TB M.2 Gen4 SSD, 4TB HDD, PSU: Rogal Gold.
Here are some points to consider:
1. Begin by removing and reinstalling your GPU drivers completely. Even after a full Windows update, updates can sometimes install new drivers that clash with those you manually installed. First, download the Displays Driver Uninstaller tool. Extract its contents, then boot your computer in safe mode. In the utility, pick your GPU from the dropdown menu and select 'Clean' before restarting. This will reset everything and restore normal operation. After that, obtain fresh drivers from the manufacturer's website and reinstall them. This summary is concise; a detailed video explains the full process.
2. If the issue persists, check your system temperatures. A loose case might not fix overheating issues, especially if your CPU cooler isn't properly seated. High temperatures can be addressed by re-seating the cooler. For temperature monitoring, HWInfo64 is a useful tool.
I would check the Event Viewer for unusual activity with the Video Card driver that didn’t resolve, which might have triggered a system restart.
I’m having trouble locating anything in the event viewer except for the message that the computer didn’t shut down properly. I followed the instructions in the video to uninstall and reinstall the driver. The motherboard BIOS was updated a few weeks ago. I haven’t found a VBIOS file for my GPU. My temperatures were monitored with a camera while playing, and they weren’t very high—especially compared to when I ran a Heaven Benchmark for 30 minutes without any crashes, nor the R23 benchmark which generated more heat than Call of Duty but still ran smoothly. Notably, after completing the benchmarks yesterday, I was able to play Call of Duty all night without issues. However, this afternoon it crashed before matchmaking ended. For Call of Duty, I closed all other apps and then swapped the GPU ports on my monitors since my smaller 1080p screen started before the PC recognized the 2K one. I’m unsure if that matters or if it could be related to power supply issues. I have a spare PSU (850W) available.
