My computer suddenly goes black and then cuts the screen to my monitor. It has an integrated GPU from a Ryzen 5 3400G. I reduced the GPU RAM from 2GB to 64MB just to avoid crashes. This machine has been with me for about two years and worked fine before. I never changed any settings and fully reset Windows and BIOS. Is there a solution even if I need to replace the GPU? I posted this issue a few days ago and someone suggested updating the BIOS, which helped temporarily until it started crashing again (also once I messed up the motherboard label). My details: CPU – Ryzen 5 3400G, GPU – built-in, RAM – unknown, 8GB DDR4, 3000MHz, PCU – unknown, 450W power, 500GB SSD. I tried everything: restarting Windows, BIOS restart, updating AMD Adrenalin, Windows update, checking SSD health with CrystalDiskInfo (health %84), CPU temps (30°C idle, 50°C max under load), updating BIOS to version 7C51v192. It’s still unclear if this fixes the problem.
Firstly, since this is likely tied to a Vram issue, the Radeon iGPU uses system memory for it's Vram. This could just simply be a case of either faulty ram or not enough ram. First, I'd run Windows Memory Diagnostic it's a memory diagnostic tool built into Windows. Let it do it's thing, if it detects any errors you just have a bad stick of ram and will need to get a new kit. I highly advise if it is ram you get a 16GB 2x8GB module kit. Don't use a single module kit and don't get less than 16GB if you want to continue to use the iGPU for your graphics. Simply not enough ram could also be the issue depending on the games you're trying to play only a single module of 8GB may not be enough for both the main system as well as sharing with the iGPU. Is the system powering off when it crashes or is it staying on just loosing display? If the system is off when it crashes and it powers off. It could be a bad PSU, causing the system to crash when under load. If the system is still on when it black screens then it's likely the GPU itself. Though unknown PSU does worry me. If you can figure out the exact unit that would be great, just so we can rule it out.
84% is too low for SSD health. Make sure to back up any crucial data and consider adding an SSD to your shopping list. It’s possible the computer is running out of memory. The 8GB minimum for Windows is now the strict limit, and since your GPU is also using that RAM, this could cause issues. I’d prefer 16GB of RAM instead. A separate discrete GPU might help lower RAM usage, but it would likely be cheaper and improve performance if you can afford it.
Sure, I could definitely consider adding more RAM. I’m not overly concerned about the SSD’s condition since my files are mostly stored in the cloud.
