I've relied on VLC for a long time to handle audio and video, thanks to its comprehensive codec support. Do you think there are more modern alternatives available? Also, can newer programs open MKV files without additional steps?
VLC appears to be the most comprehensive yet streamlined free player available, making it the top choice.
I recently moved from VLC to PotPlayer. I realized I prefer PotPlayer more for a certain reason, and it offers similar or even greater features than VLC. http://potplayer.daum.net/
Windows Media Player often lacks popularity... Foobar offers a compact music player experience. Wish there were a feature similar to Steam Music's overlay.
MPC-HC paired with MadVR for videos, and Foobar for music. On Windows, avoid using other applications.
I rely on Klite mainly since the person who created VLC is quite problematic, but it also works well at caching fonts or something similar. MPC handles the task effectively, and I use iTunes for my music.
