Future Apple RAM upgrades for the base model?
I recall many whispers about the M4 chip, but little talk about the forthcoming M5. The biggest reason I’d consider an upgrade would be if 24GB of RAM becomes the default for M-Series Macs. Since Apple set 16GB as the standard in late 2024, when do you think 24GB will follow?
They took a long time to complete 16 standard, so I expect 24 will be done by 2045.
RAM capacity might rise, but 24GB seems improbable. This setup is unusual. The DRAM on M4-series chips is divided into two or four modules, and configurations like 12GB+12GB or 6+6+6+6 would need 6 or 12GB LPDDR5 chips. Those are available, though they’re an odd size. DDR4 and DDR3 didn’t commonly come in 3GB increments, while DDR5 is the first to offer that. Who knows if DDR6 will appear? Likely we’ll see DDR8 before Apple decides to boost memory further.
