Full utilization of the GPU during YouTube playback
Full utilization of the GPU during YouTube playback
Hi everyone, welcome! I apologize for any imperfections in my English. Recently, I assembled a very affordable PC built around a Ryzen processor; everything functions smoothly, though there’s a minor annoyance: I’m running a Ryzen 3 3200G APU with a Gigabyte A320M-S2H motherboard and 16 GB of RAM. It handles light games well, but struggles significantly with YouTube and Netflix. Generally, the GPU usage fluctuates between 15% and 25%, often reaching full capacity, which leads to noticeable stuttering that stops only when I pause the video. The task manager graph indicates that "Video Codec 0" is at peak usage. Initially, I thought it was a background process, but the issue persists even with just one browser tab open. I have the newest Windows 11 version, the latest AMD drivers, and the most recent BIOS. There’s no overheating during these occurrences. I’ve found that disabling Hardware Acceleration in the browser settings helps, though it limits Netflix resolution to 720p on Edge. Anyone else experiencing this problem? Do you have a solution or advice? Thank you very much!
I possess the most recent BIOS and the newest AMD adrenaline drivers. I've tested both Adrenalin 21.10.2 and Adrenalin 21.11.1, yet no variations were noticed.
Additionally, I encounter the same issue using the official Netflix app from the Microsoft Store.
These browsers all run Chromium. You can click on the video to view "stats for nerds" and share the results for Edge and Firefox.
Uncertain if others are still dealing with this, but I experienced the same challenge on Chrome, Edge, and Opera while watching VP9 videos with HW acceleration on YouTube and similar platforms since early 2020. Using a Lenovo Ryzen 5 3500U laptop, the problem was fixed yesterday by updating the BIOS firmware (LENOVO AMCN31WW(V1.14), dated 08/06/2022). I had previously updated the BIOS at least twice, but it didn’t resolve the issue on Windows 11. Interestingly, the problem started on Windows 10 and disappeared after the BIOS update, then reappeared with Windows 11. Now, playing 4K60 VP9 videos is smooth—Task Manager shows the codec usage stays around 60-70% without going to 100%. This has been quite frustrating. The recommendation is to check for the latest BIOS updates for your device and install them manually.
