From old PC components to an efficient home server
I've modified a PC with custom components more than fifteen years ago and it still operates smoothly. At the same time, I no longer use the machine since laptops are becoming more common in our homes. I'm considering turning this old PC into a home server running Unraid. The hardware includes:
- Intel i5-4460 3.2 Ghz
- 8 GB RAM
- 320 GB SATA (Samsung HD322HJ)
- 250 GB SSD (Crucial CT250BX100SSD1)
- MSI B85-G41 Motherboard
- Intel HD Graphics 4600
- Corsair vx450 W
Before starting this project, I'm wondering if it's feasible to build a power-efficient system by swapping some parts on a low budget? Or should I keep the PC as it is and purchase new components to achieve efficiency? My priority for the home server is:
- NAS
- private Cloud (for iOS/Android)
- VPN Server
- Streaming Server
A "home server" requires minimal power and usually stays idle most of the time. Besides insufficient storage space, there aren't many issues with your existing device. However, adding storage would be necessary, and any hardware changes would require significant adjustments. $$$.

A pre-installed NAS (such as QNAP or Synology).
Even lower power usage and more advanced features in the operating system and software.
