I'd destroy it and begin anew from a backup. Fingers crossed someone else has a more effective plan.

Perhaps? I’d have to give it a shot. Still, my answer isn’t great, and since no one else shared alternatives, it’s a little concerning...

I reduced the 900gb main partition by 800gigs, leaving an unallocated space of 800gb. Then he created a simple volume from that. It’s not clear if this is the best approach, but he aimed for two separate drives, and now he has them.

I trust both volumes received the correct storage assigned to them, and the SSD remains separate from the HDD's allocation...
