Frequent laptop restarts in seconds may indicate a CPU or motherboard issue.
Hello All! The laptop frequently shuts down abruptly within two minutes after powering on, sometimes even before the system fully boots. Here are the details: Motherboard info: Processor: Intel i7 4700MQ GPU: Nvidia 740M Storage: 1TB HDD RAM: 8GB RAM Package: Socket 947 rPGA TDP: 47.0W Southbridge: Intel HM87 What I've tried: Jumped into minimal safe mode, but it still reboots hard. Removed all Nvidia drivers via DDU in safe mode and turned off the "3D video Controller" in Device Manager, yet it keeps rebooting. Tested Ubuntu LiveCD – after about 2-3 minutes the screen turns multi-colored and displays a reboot prompt, requiring a manual restart. In BIOS I left the laptop idle for 3-4 minutes; then horizontal lines appeared instead of a reboot. Eventually, the display stopped working completely. The service center cleaned the fan and reapplied thermal paste, but the problem persisted. Placing the laptop near an AC unit resolved the issue temporarily – it ran smoothly for roughly an hour with normal use. I positioned it on a stand so cool air directly reached the base where the fan operates. The repair person suggested checking the Nvidia GPU, though I’m not certain. He mentioned attempting a DIY fix by forcefully removing the GPU using a Heatgun, which could damage the motherboard. From the Control Panel, the display was linked to Intel HD Graphics, so the colored lines might actually be from HD Graphics rather than the Nvidia card. It would help to confirm whether the CPU or motherboard is the root cause, as the MQ series processor can be replaced.
Nvidia optimus is handling this situation. Linking an external screen directly from the GPU helps. Temporarily turning off the built-in display can help determine if the issue lies with Intel graphics.
I’ll do it as soon as my external monitor becomes available. Meanwhile, may I inquire about which parts of the motherboard tend to get warm? Yes, all components heat up during operation, but since cooling is mainly focused on just a few—primarily the CPU and GPU—it’s hard to identify exactly which one causes the motherboard issues (except for the CPU). I’m asking because I turned off both graphics adapters via Device Manager and kept HWMonitor running; at that time, the laptop shut down automatically and rebooted, with CPU temperatures around 48°C.
Power supply and storage are definitely covered, no other ideas popping up right now
