While watching this video, I noticed he was suggesting RockStor for the free Nas OS. However, I heard FreeNAS is well-known for its NAS OS. Which one would you prefer? Thanks.

I've worked with FreeNAS and UNRAID, so I suggest either one depending on your needs. If you only need storage and file shares, go with FreeNAS since ZFS offers better reliability. Plugins on UNRAID perform better, while FreeNAS tends to have more issues.

It's being used for storage purposes. FreeNAS works well but needs substantial hardware resources to operate effectively.

Hey there! Glad you reached out. I'm thinking of using them mainly for backup and archiving. I'm planning a Pentium to i3 setup, and maybe starting with 4GB RAM, upgrading to 8GB if needed. I think Unraid sounds better since it's a paid product, giving it a premium feel. But I'm aiming for a home build on a budget, so I'm comparing two free NAS operating systems: FreeNAS and Rockstor. Thanks again! ~gid

I mentioned earlier that I prefer it to be "free" from the start. Thanks!

It's unclear what you're referring to. You mentioned needing help with something, but didn't specify the topic. Freenas, Windows Server, and Unraid are the only three you found worth considering.

Rockstor fits your needs well based on your specifications. Review the quickstart guide for installation details and minimum requirements: http://rockstor.com/docs/quickstart.html...quirements. As noted earlier, UnRaid isn’t free. Rockstor matches UnRaid’s functionality—such as managing disks of various sizes and offering redundancy—but it’s open source and free. Using Rockstor gives you access to advanced BTRFS Copy-on-write capabilities like snapshots, self-healing data, compression, and more, making it a strong backup and secondary storage choice. Rockstor also supports docker-based application hosting (Rock-ons) and provides APIs to enhance its features. This creates a robust cloud platform you can tailor to your requirements with full control. Give it a shot and check it out. For questions, visit the forum at http://forum.rockstor.com.
