My system details are: Ryzen 5 3600X, no overclocking, ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3080, 10GB RAM, 16GB DDR4 at 3200Mhz, MSI X-570 A-Pro, MB. The latest drivers for GPU and chipset are available, and here’s a user benchmark score: Game 192%, Desk 96%, Work 182% CPU. GPU: Nvidia RTX 3080, 213.9%, SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 120GB, 79.2%, SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 500GB, 116.1%, SSD: Samsung 980 NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB, 243.2%, HDD: Seagate ST1000LM035-1RK172 1TB, 69.6%, RAM: Kingston HyperX DDR4 3200 C16 2x8GB, 87.4%, MBD: MSI X570-A PRO (MS-7C37).

Since I upgraded from a 2060 to an ASUS Strix 3080, I notice consistent frame drops in every game I play in fullscreen, every 7 seconds. That means I can literally count to seven and it drops—that’s unusual. I’m planning to upload a screenshot from AC Valhalla, which clearly shows these fluctuations. The drops happen in all games, especially Cyberpunk and Superhot, so it’s not just graphics. When I switch to windowed borderless mode, the drops disappear completely, but some games don’t support it.

I’ve tried several troubleshooting steps: disabled Windows Fullscreen Optimization, changed DPI settings, turned off gaming functions, closed MSI Afterburner and Riva Tuner, adjusted Nvidia Control Panel settings (threaded optimization, triple buffering), set refresh rate to 60Hz, enabled/disabled V-Sync in-game and via Control Panel. I’ve also experimented with many settings, but it’s hard to pinpoint the cause. Before resetting my system, I wanted to ask if I missed anything important.

It occurs repeatedly every seven seconds or just once. The chart repeats, making heat unlikely. Could be a buffer dump or something similar? I see one SSD performing almost as slow as the HDD. Even SATA SSDs should be much quicker than a traditional HDD.

It keeps happening again and again. The game shown in the screenshot is running on my M.2 SSD, but no matter where it's installed, it still crashes. What do you mean by buffer dump?

Some buffer or similar area is filling up roughly every seven seconds, possibly due to the way it fills or empties. It appears to happen consistently, which might point to a frame buffer situation. I’m not sure exactly what’s causing it, but for comparison, think of a glass dipping bird. What could be filling up isn’t clear to me. Additionally, the SSD seems unusually sluggish, which could be another area to investigate.

Have you considered where to show or verify the buffer problem? I used RTSS to view my hardware, but didn’t see anything unusual. The slow SSD with the OS might be the cause of the slowness during testing, but I’ll still check for any issues.

Some systems use a single SSD, so disabling its driver or removing it might resolve the problem—just check if it disappears. You might skip it entirely. It could be a major hassle to arrange, especially if the affected drive is the boot drive. Running Chkdsk on it probably wouldn’t cause harm, though accessing it from winRE would be necessary.
