I never claimed it was a gimmick, just that they're not essential. I haven't faced any problems with the 10 or so 12th Gen Intel configurations I've worked on, including my own setup. If you're looking for a cooler with LGA1700 support, it's really not needed. There might be a niche use case for minimal setups, but I don't believe they're widely adopted. With years of experience and hundreds of builds under my belt, I'm surprised to hear about this even being a topic. The main issue is these components are only available for 12th Gen and the sockets are rarely used, so we can't suggest anything for older models. Getting upset because someone can't recommend something that doesn't exist feels unfair.
In the first place, I'm not mad at anyone. I was being snarky about how many people responded simply because they "love the sound of their own voice" so to speak. A question was asked and they didn't answer it. If I ask for directions to a building, it's absurd to reply with a reason why I shouldn't want to go there in the first place. It's simply not an answer to the question that was asked. I don't take it personally and neither should anyone else. It's more a result of poor reading comprehension than anything else. I specified in my original post that I knew what the purpose of the frames were (evening out the mounting pressure of the LGA socket) and I also stated that I know the difference between LGA 1700 and the older sockets (1200, 115x, etc.). I specified that the reason I was interested at all was purely academic; for purposes of "testing and playing around with". I've build many hundreds of PCs over the decades and am perfectly aware that there aren't any "problems" with the LGA 155x socket or ILM. But there is a difference; even though the socket isn't fundamentally broken, doesn't mean it can't be improved upon. Even if the gains were insubstantial (.5c or something) that's... something. And maybe it's worth $9 to me so... why fuss?
For that tiny temperature difference, invest in a higher-quality TIM. Alphacool just launched a TIM with 17 mK/W performance. Alternatively, consider TF8 or T9+ options. Any of these choices will boost your efficiency without needing a useless fan setup or other changes.
