Frames kept dropping after I upgraded my GPU. My computer has been running slower ever since.
since i upgraded my graphics card from a 1660 super to a 3060, my computer has faced various issues such as stuttering and lower framerates. i tried using a ddu power adapter but it didn’t help much. i have a 600w power supply, a ryzen 9 3900x, and a 3060 i serarched for a better one. nividia suggested a 650w model, which seems like a reasonable choice since my system still powers on and works, though it runs very slowly. i’ve updated my bios and drivers, but i’m unsure if anyone has any advice. please let me know if you have suggestions. thank you.
50 watts below the suggested level usually isn't a big problem, particularly with a solid product. Nvidia tends to be careful because some users experience poor PSU performance. If the power supply lacks sufficient capacity, it might cause the system to fail to start rather than prevent full startup. Under heavy load, the machine could shut down unexpectedly. Keep an eye on CPU and GPU usage along with temperatures while gaming using tools like Intel PresentMon or MSI Afterburner. Also share your other specifications—such as RAM type, speed, dual-channel setup, etc.
Your specs are listed in the bio, but you’ve got an MSI afterburner installed. CPU performance is normal, yet your GPU is consistently at 60% to 80% utilization. You also noted heavy VRAM usage during videos, especially when playing games, and your RAM is positioned in dual-channel slots.
VRAM usage during gaming is typical, as it's meant for that purpose. It shouldn't be shared with other applications. Are we referring to a specific game or the 3060 with an 8 or 12 GB model? Insufficient VRAM can lead to subpar performance. You might want to lower settings like texture resolution if needed. Generally, 8 GB works well for most titles and 12 GB shouldn't cause problems. GPU utilization around 60-80% is normal, suggesting CPU constraints rather than a major issue. If the game offers options to cut CPU load, use them. Otherwise, boosting graphical details can help maintain smoother performance.
I own a 12 GB 3060 and struggle to run B06 without switching to safe mode, as Siege keeps freezing heavily. Playing Rust works fine with minimal VRAM usage—around 5 GB—but B06 crashes even when I limit settings, suggesting it’s not fully utilizing its resources or is being restricted somehow.
It might stem from CPU constraints rather than graphics limitations. Many titles rely heavily on single-core performance, so adding more cores offers little benefit. Focus on monitoring individual core usage instead of total utilization. If a few cores are consistently near full while others sit idle, you're likely CPU-bound. With AM4 platforms, updating the CPU should be straightforward if needed. A game requiring only 5 GB will load textures and data into VRAM as required. If it stays within that range, extra memory isn't necessary. This suggests VRAM shortages—not CPU power—are probably the issue.
