I recently assisted a friend with his PC upgrade. The current setup includes a Ryzen 9 5900X, Gigabyte B550 Gaming x V2, 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz RAM, a 3080 Deepcool 750W PSU, and Dell OEM 3080. He primarily plays CS2 but has also tested other games. The frame rate starts around 350 FPS with medium/high settings, then drops to lows of 80-100 after a few minutes. After checking temperatures and clock speeds via hwinfo, everything stayed within normal ranges, with the GPU and CPU reaching about 70°C max. I updated drivers, BIOS, and Windows, even changed settings in CS and NVIDIA Control Panel. Despite these efforts, frame rates remain extremely low, nearly unplayable, even with top-tier hardware. For reference, before this upgrade he was using a Ryzen 5 3600 and 1660Ti, achieving around 200 FPS on average. I’ve tried all troubleshooting steps possible, but I’m still stuck and my friend is struggling in games. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Likely the delay when the 5900x moves across the infinity fabric to pair both CCDs creates a stuttering effect during the frame capture. It might also mean you should reinstall the chipset drivers. The 5900x isn't built for gaming performance, but adjusting Processor Affinity or using tools like Process Lasso can help. The 5950x offers eight CCD cores and is less likely to face this issue than even the 7900x, which can encounter it. You could turn off the second group of six cores in the UEFI settings if that doesn't fix things, otherwise consider testing it. If it still doesn't work, the problem may lie with software.

Download Intel PresentMon and keep it active during gaming. Watch Frame Times and GPU Busy times, observe the graph when frame drops appear. Check for spikes in frame time and lack of GPU activity—this suggests a CPU bottleneck. If found, confirm your RAM is operating at its rated speed and enable XMP if available. For 3200mhz modules rated CL22 or above, you’re sacrificing significant CPU performance since Ryzen relies on fast memory for optimal gaming. HWInfo can reveal the timings if you’re unsure how to check in BIOS. If your settings are solid and you’re using dual channel, consider replacing the 5900x with the 5800x3D or 5700x3D modules. These offer 96MB of L3 Cache versus the standard 32MB, delivering better performance despite lower clock speeds. They can match the speed of Ryzen 5000 models and even rival the 12900K in certain titles. Feel free to ask if you have more questions.
