My setup includes a CPU with a Ryzen 9800X3D, an Asus ROG Ryujin III Extreme cooler, and an Asus ROG X870E Hero keyboard. The RAM is two 16GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 6000 DDR4 modules at CL30 speed. I'm using a Seasonic Noctua 1600 ATX power supply with a 3.1 rating.
I'm attempting to apply OC and UV settings on the CPU, but my temperatures remain stable, often rising slightly instead of dropping. In tests, I achieved stability at -15°C.
First test: running Cinebench before and after showed lower scores (1262 vs 1228) and higher average temps (74°C vs 79°C). I reset the BIOS with CMOS, cleared default settings, and tried again after rebooting.
Second test: the score improved slightly (1370 vs 1271), but temperatures increased by about half a degree (78°C vs 80°C). During this latest OC test, temperatures stayed consistently at 85°C (maximum set in BIOS).
Please note that my 9800X3D experiences temperature spikes each time I start the PC, lasting a few seconds before returning to normal idle temps (45–55°C).
PS 2: The 9800X3D always fluctuates in idle temperatures, never maintaining a steady value.
PS 3: My Ryujin III Extreme displays a temperature around 10°C lower than the readings from HWMonitor.
I would appreciate your assistance.
Is the bios equipped with PBO?
PBO enhances performance up to the CPU's maximum temperature, allowing undervolting to provide a slight increase without exceeding the same temperature limit.
Your aim is to reduce temperature without sacrificing performance, and even a slight improvement would be appreciated. If you adjust the settings in advanced PBO, should it definitely be activated?
This processor behavior is characteristic of newer x3d models. I’m using a 7800x3d and I’m sure you understand what’s being discussed—your chip operates identically. In these devices, a negative offset doesn’t influence lower temperatures. The limit of 85°C also doesn’t matter because the processor will aim to function at 85C during synthetic tests or under heavy load. Temperature spikes resulting from increased usage are also expected. Overall, these processors are built differently; they deliver optimal performance even at high temperatures, such as up to 95°C for the 9800x3d. Your temperatures are therefore completely normal and safe. For those who want to reduce them, you can manually adjust PPT to 75W. For me, that adjustment only improved temperatures, and in Cinebench I achieved 85C in games with a max of 75C, so there’s still plenty of room. In short, you don’t need to worry about temperatures—they’re fine. But if you really want lower readings, try setting PPT to 75W manually.
I'm not sure about the exact layout of your BIOS function. It seems to be located in the AMD Overclocking tab. You can search for "Precision Boost Overdrive" in BIOS Precision Boost settings. In PBO advanced settings, you should find PPT settings. Set them to manual and enter 75 if the value is in W, or 75000 if the board displays in mW.
