When gaming, sometimes FPS drops sharply even when not playing, then recovers over time. It happens regardless of location or activity. I’m experiencing this with my current setup: RTX 2070, Ryzen 5 5600X, 16GB RAM, 2400mhz, ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F. It keeps fluctuating between 100 and 20 over about 30 minutes, then settles again. Any tips to fix this?

It appears a background program could be consuming significant resources. Activities like games and system updates often contribute to this. Run the game in a windowed setting and launch Task Manager. Monitor for any sudden increases in process activity or high percentage usage in the tabs. Look for any unexpected spikes that suggest heavy consumption.

It's been happening for several months now, and it's only affected GTA 5 and FiveM. For instance, Warzone works just fine, with no issues or spikes.

It would have been helpful to hear right away. Since it appears to be just GTA 5, try reducing your FPS using the Riva tuner. Or adjust your settings a bit and enable VSync during fullscreen play.

Verify if your setup is slowing down due to heat, I rely on HWiNFO to monitor all temps and related metrics.

I verified my temperatures; the CPU was idling at 80°C. After five minutes, I opened Task Manager to check CPU usage and noticed the temps dropped to 60°C straight away. I’m curious about the cause of that change.

In Task Manager, verify if any processes are consuming CPU. Ensure it isn't running at high temperatures.

When the task manager was shut down, it ran at 80% utilization. Opening it to investigate caused it to immediately drop to 60% usage, with no CPU activity detected afterward.

Hwinfo must display the usage details when the interface is closed and indicate the percentage values.

I verified the situation and with 30% CPU usage in GTA 5 my temperatures stayed near 90°C, peaking at 94°C. It seems an AIO would be beneficial since my current regular AMD cooler isn’t handling it well.
