FPS is under 29 for about one minute
Hi everyone, it's a good day here and I've been playing games on my HP laptop using coolpad but whenever VSYNC is off the frame rate goes above 100. Suddenly the FPS drops below 30 and stays low for about one minute before coming back up to over 100 again. My question is, even if this small percentage of a problem comes from faulty hardware? It isn't happening when VSYNC is on, where the frame rate is steady at 60. The temperatures are normal. My specs include an i5 12450H processor, 16 gigs of RAM, and an RTX 3050 graphics card with minimum settings turned on in each game.
Are you moving the laptop around or bumping the table when this happens? There are motion sensors on modern laptops that slow down the graphics card for about 45 seconds. I have three of them, two are Acer and one is a Dell. It's not written down clearly but it happens. To test it, give the top part of your laptop a little tap and see if it slows down sometimes you may even need to hold it up to make sure to trigger it. My Dell reacts much more quickly than an Acers. (Edit: To add) If you have NVIDIA software enabled you should be able to see the clock speed on screen to confirm what's going on.
Check your graphics card's speed, heat, and use while using an app or game. But here is the truth: if you put something on your computer like a mug right next to it, that can cause some really annoying problems.
My 3050 drops down to 1245 when an "event" happens. That usually means it is on one of my Acer laptops. You can also check "Prefer Max Performance" in NVIDIA Control Panel, under Global settings > Power Management mode. Setting that should stop the graphics card from fluctuating based on how much work you are doing. This part is hard to figure out because laptops and desktops are very different. Laptops have less room for heat (thermally constrained) and often come with their own special software or firmware that makes diagnosing things tricky.
