FPS drops significantly for a short time! Any ideas to help identify the issue?
Hello everyone,
I’m facing an issue where my FPS drops sharply from +100 to 1-3 fps for a few seconds during gameplay, especially inside that game.
Here are my current specs:
Rtx 3050
Rayzen 5 5600
Mb: Biostar B550Mh
PSu: LCpower 550w (Bronze edition – not sure if it makes a difference)
Ram: 32gb DDR4 3200Mhz (using different types but similar speed)
SSD: Unknown, but I know it’s a low-end +1TB HDD
I’m mentioning the SSD because I think this problem might be due to its inability to handle the game speed.
When playing Call of Duty: Warzone, I previously had smooth performance at +100 FPS. However, once the game starts to slow down, my FPS drops to 1-3 for a short time before returning to normal, then repeats after a few minutes. This issue also occurs on CS2.
This problem started after purchasing my PC, whereas it didn’t happen when I first bought it.
My GPU temperature stays between 65% and 69%.
After some time, I used an MSI Afterburner to monitor GPU usage and power consumption. When the FPS drop occurred, the GPU usage and wattage dropped to 0%.
So, is my PSU failing or is there another cause? I’ve tried adjusting game settings, but nothing has changed.
If anyone else is experiencing the same issue, please let me know what you’re doing.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
SSD: I’m not sure what I have, but it’s a low-end + 1tb HDD.
Which drive did you install the games on? You should provide the SSD and its capacity details back to us.
Have you checked for any pending BIOS updates on your motherboard?
After some time, I used MSI Afterburner to track GPU usage and wattage. When FPS dropped, my GPU usage went to 0% and wattage to 0%.
You might want to try removing all GPU drivers (Intel, AMD, Nvidia) using DDU in Safe Mode, then install the latest driver from Nvidia’s support site manually via an elevated command.
PSu: LCpower 550w (Bronze edition – not sure if it makes a difference)
How old is your PSU?
Ram: 32gb DDR4 3200Mhz (similar speeds, just different types)
Please clarify so I can give you more accurate advice. You don’t change tires on your car, you get the same set for all wheels.

Hello,
I own an SSD with 512GB HIKVISION E100 2.5'' SATA 6Gb/s, and I've tried playing games on it, but the issue keeps occurring. I'm not sure if I should check for a BIOS update since I'm new to these things—I only use Windows updates and driver updates. This is my third year with my PSU, and every other component in my build. My RAM uses BAllistix, while the other uses Xpg; I didn't choose the same brand but picked it carefully for performance.
The same issue continues to occur with me. Have you also updated your bios? I’m not home, so I can’t confirm if reverting it would help. I’m not a pro, so please check before attempting that. Also, does your FPS drop to a specific number and then freeze for a few seconds, or does it just fluctuate? I want to know if this is the same problem.
I'm not sure how to verify if I have the latest BIOS update, as I'm just a beginner in these matters. I only use Windows Update and GeForce driver updates. Check CPU-Z under the Mainboard tab; please send a screenshot for reference. For my RAM, I use BALLISTIX and the other is XPG, but I didn't find matching brands, though I selected them carefully for similar performance. These are generic photos—can you check the labeled side of the RAM modules? Please also share images of the RAM slots to help identify the models. Selecting carefully isn't enough because they might not come from the same production line, and we can't guarantee identical RAM chips. Just like you don't change tire sets for your car, you shouldn't mix different RAM types without confirmation. Also, don't forget to follow up on the DDU suggestion I gave you.
