My specifications
gtx 1070 8gb Sc
ryzen 5 2600
hyper x 2x8gb 3200 mhz
MSU b350 mate
stock Amd cooler
1tb harddrive
corsair rmx 650 pcu
I manage to play well without FPS drops on ultra settings (bf5) when Discord is closed, but drops occur even with it open. When I have Discord running, FPS decreases even at medium settings. What might be causing this? I notice my hard drive can get a bit warm sometimes, so maybe switching to an SSD would help?

Turn off the Discord overlay if it's active, at least for now.
SSD might be useful if you're in many servers or places where people post content.

Would an SSD improve game performance when playing bf5? If you only have bf5 and Discord running, what would consume the most disk space?

It's not space, it's the Discord app consuming time from the games level/asset streaming part.

Yes, turning off the overlay might resolve the problem.

Overlay might resolve it by reducing GPU usage. Should that not work, a SSD is likely to assist.

Consider turning off the GPU acceleration setting for Discord if it isn't already disabled. Opt for an SSD instead.
