Fortnite has the ability to bypass standard parental controls regarding friend requests.
Hi there, I usually don’t post on forums, but I’m trying to understand some challenges I’m facing as a parent who wants to let my child play games. I’m looking into parental controls and wondering if we’ve missed something important. Recently, my son had an issue with Fortnite on Xbox. Even though I set up a Microsoft account for him and linked an Xbox account, I installed the family app and changed the restrictions to suit his needs. It seems Fortnite can skip those filters, which is confusing since the support team said only Xbox invites are blocked. They didn’t mention friend requests being filtered, and they also mentioned in-game purchases would be limited if the app had restrictions. The Xbox Family setup doesn’t say this, and Epic’s guide on parental controls suggests platform-level limits might not work for friend requests either. They claim purchases will be restricted if the app has that feature, but I’m not sure it’s enough. I’ve had similar problems with the Switch and YouTube, and it seems companies are pushing paid options for full control. I’m trying to balance keeping my child safe with letting them enjoy gaming, but it’s frustrating to figure out where the gaps are. Any suggestions or advice would be really helpful. Thanks, Annoyed Dad
