I personally use a 10gb NIC for my home setup. As an ISP employee, I've been evaluating 10gb fiber at my residence using this device. The performance is constrained by the Optic in our network cabinet, and I consistently achieve 7-8gbps in both directions. https://www.owc.com/solutions/10g-ethern...rk-adapter
Streaming speeds are very low, three people streaming in 4K won’t reach 100Mbit even when everyone streams at high resolution. When buffering, you often see spikes up to server limits but then experience delays for a few seconds. It’s tough to determine the true average performance. Downloading from Steam across multiple clients is one rare scenario where link saturation might happen, though it’s unlikely that 4Gbit will be delivered via XGS-PON, which could allow sharing 10Gbit with over 64 users on fiber during busy times—still not a certainty.
Intel network cards outperform other options like chelsio. Experienced problems with tp-link and Asus devices, especially during heavy continuous data transfers. Latest Intel models offer multi-gigabit Ethernet capabilities for faster 2.5/5GB connections.
It seems the ASUS Aquantia/Marvell cards behave differently across operating systems—unstable on Windows but stable on Linux. In fact, my experience was smoother on Linux compared to an Intel card, which was quite surprising.
