It isn't a license you can apply to any computer. The free Windows 10 upgrade is meant for the original system you upgraded from. If you purchased a new machine or changed components like the motherboard, you'll need a different license.

This applies only when the original license is OEM or a branded OEM. For retail, the advantages remain. However, I believe it's more about a gentle suggestion to link a Microsoft account and connect the license.
