I think the big takeaway is that there's never really going to be a guarantee - how can there be, especially when RAM manufacturers will change IC's on the same SKU throughout its production lifespan? How can you be sure the ones that were tested by the motherboard manufacturer are going to even be the same? Good rule of thumb is to know the architecture you're using it in, know the typical behavior of their memory controllers, and realize you're probably going to have to do a little work to get them running right most of the time. Often it's just XMP and go, but just as often it's not quite so easy. That way, QVL or not, you have a good chance of finding success.

This review comes from someone who’s curious about the same thing. I received a 32GB dual-rank B-die build that wasn’t listed on the QVL but was highly praised. The PC is performing exceptionally, suggesting compatibility depends more on selection than manufacturer approval.
